A nonprofit organisation, the client is one of the chief sources of knowledge in chemistry, disseminating information through over 51 peer reviewed journals, trade magazines, and books. The client also holds conferences on chemistry and has its own chemical database aggregator that curates content from chemistry databases across the globe.

Background
As the largest scientific society in the world, the client would need to spend a considerable amount of time in managing memberships and ensuring that members were getting access to appropriate content and resources based on their varying levels of membership. Keeping their growing number of members in mind, the client wanted to streamline their membership management processes and leverage technology to engage members and improve the overall user experience. With a manual version of the association management software already in place, the client was looking for a technology partner with rich experience in the publishing domain along with expertise in configuring membership management software.

Our Work
Our work in this engagement centred on developing new applications that could integrate with the client’s existing membership management software setup. The client required support with two of their key business applications, one that allowed users to enrol/renew as members and the other that allowed members to nominate themselves as post bearers within the society.

Membership enrolment application

  • Creating a new chapter membership structure offering different membership packages using iWeb
  • Setting up discount modules aligned to campaigns held by the client from time to time STM Publishing
  • Developing an web application that collects basic user details and demographic data in order to automatically offer appropriate packages to users
  • Building an e-Commerce functionality into the application that helps add packages to a user’s cart and complete the enrolment/renewal process after successful payment
  • Building an admin functionality within web that enables support teams to track the progress of each enrolment and accordingly provide support wherever needed
  • Developing a reporting module to enable strategic planning for campaigns.

Membership nomination application

  • Developing a nomination and review system for the client
  • Building a functionality in the nomination system to capture nomination related data, along with a partial save functionality to help pause and resume applications
  • Implementing complex dynamic validation based on the nomination type like Individual, committee, local section and technical division
  • Developing a web application for reviews and defining workflows for moving reviews from one stage to the other, and adding an offline feature for reviewing nominations offline
