‘Caught on Camera’ but who are they?

Policing in the UK is working hard to rebuild public confidence and trust with several successful initiatives focussing on high profile types of crime such as, Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), Hate Crimes and Shoplifting amongst others.

The ability to target these crimes and bring criminals to justice, quicker, is central to the ethos of ‘Precision Policing’.

Various sources of technology, such as mobile phones, dash cams and CCTV, generate millions of images a year of individuals ‘caught on camera’ all of which are submitted to the police and require analysis. Some are of far better quality than others, but all have the potential to be used to help in the identification of suspects, missing people or vulnerable individuals.

However, it takes precious resources in terms of officers and time to review and analyse even the highest priority investigations – time that suspects remain on the streets to potentially commit further offences.

A lookup process that used to take days can now be achieved in seconds. For one force of 3,000 officers, the time saved amounts to an annual efficiency savings of £250,000 and the successful prosecution of over 100 incidents a month. Police Productivity Review.

In another case, neighbouring forces were able to collaborate by sharing CCTV images of a suspect and, using RFR, to provide an identification that led to an arrest within 48 hours – a task that would have taken the force up to 6 months to complete without access to this technology.
